From raging storms to tranquil blue majesty, the seas are nothing less than mesmerizing and extraordinary. Sailors past and present have been writing down their experiences, some, in part, to provide some sensibility to the sheer aw struck wonder; while for most it’s an attempt not to forget what they have witnessed – for they know it was great. Yet, somehow, despite the version or tale, none have quite been able to put to pen and paper her power and enchantment. Whether it is the Sirens, Poseidon, or the Kraken, I find the accounts all true in their own way – maybe not literally, but certainly the emotion that carries through. I’ve held on as my ship has rocked in storms that have lasted days. I’ve seen moments of absolute beauty and still calmness almost as if I had been temporarily transported to Heaven as I catch myself staring for hours at the vast and seemingly endless emptiness. In my last return to the ship it has become self-evident that my life is inexplicably changed by the sea and that it is selfish to keep these experiences to myself. I work as a Third Mate and have embarked on my second voyage aboard the USNS Maury. I hope you enjoy reading the exciting and enthralling adventure a life at sea can be. As I sit here and ponder what my life at sea, while short thus far, has been for me – a crazy unexpected adventure comes to mind. I have grown, and become much more grateful in the process. Of course, I did have a bit of mixed emotions about sailing when I first started. It certainly wasn’t the life I saw for myself growing up, but sailing has become rewarding and I truly feel that I am where I’m meant to be.
So welcome to my crazy and exciting life as a Third Mate! To all my friends and family, and those who wonder about a life at sea, this is for you. I have a love of photography and the sea is certainly something to capture. I can’t think of a better and interactive way to share my art. To my maritime friends, I hope this brings a laugh or two.
Stay Salty!
