I got the unique opportunity to give maritime training aboard the USS Key West SSN 722! Today was a thrill. I got invited on board to discuss Rules of the Road and Bridge Resource Management Strategies. The crew got to pick the brain of a merchant mariner about the navigation systems we use on commercial ships; as well as the similarities and differences of Bridge Watchstanding procedures. There were may take a ways form the discussion. The main benefit is that the Submariners got to understand the merchant ships that they encounter out at sea are thinking and what to expect. As a Strategic Sealift Officer is was a grate day for me professionally. The mission of the Navy Reserve program is to be liaisons between the Navy and the Merchant Marine. Today achieved this mission. I even got a tour. Of course, you can’t visit a Submarine and not take a Selfie! 😛
