With a free Friday afternoon, Matt and I decided to tour the USS Midway Museum. It was even cooler than I thought it would be and I definitely recommend the Museum for anyone who wants something to do in San Diego. It is located right next to the Sea Port Village and the San Diego Maritime Museum, with Little Italy only a few blocks away. The aircraft carrier was commissioned on September 10, 1945 and was in service for 47 years. She held the title of the largest ship in the world until 1955. Her Total Displacement is 64,000 tons, Length Overall is 1,001ft, and her beam is 136ft. In the 1950s she could carry over 100 aircraft, but during the Vietnam War and later wars she carried about 65 onboard. With a homeport of Alameda, California, she was very active across the Pacific. The Midway was involved in almost every conflict since WW2. Most notably, she was the flagship of Dessert Shield and Dessert Storm. Including flight crew and marines, the Midway set sail with a compliment of 4100 crew. That’s over 1200 meals served per day!

The Merchant Marine totally got a shout out!! The museum has a whole section dedicated to the logistics supply chain and Underway Replenishments!! They even covered vertreps, and conreps with videos that showed the fuel line connect cables and the Trolley. I’m not going to lie, it felt pretty good! 🚒 ✊

The Midway truly is a must see!

Stay Salty!
