PECU

So what’s great about a PECU? EVERYTHING!! You can cut stuff with fire! The Portable Extothermal Cutting Unit can be used in many scenarios aboard ship, but is mainly reserved for Damage Control emergency situations. Damage Control is a large part of the Third Mate’s responsiblities. The Mate is in charge of inventorying each item as well as knowing how and when to use each item should an emergency occur. We decided to have a training day with the PECU and I must say it was a thrill to try it out!

In the video, you can see our OS Terrance cutting some metal. The PECU works by using compressed Oxygen and igniting the cutting rod once you make a spark. It can cut metal up to a half inch thick, which means you can use it in a vast number of scenarios. Removing a shipmate who is tapped unconscience inside a confined space would be one example. Remember folks, haha, PPE keeps you pretty! 😛
